Plumbing Emergencies

Disasters can range from the devastation of a burst pipe to the lethal effects of contaminated water and Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Most problems can be avoided if you keep your plumbing and heating systems well maintained.

Burst Pipes

The first thing to do is to stop the flow of water. Turn off all stop valves which are often sited under the kitchen sink or in the airing cupboard. If you cannot find the internal valves, turn off the water at the isolation valve external to the property which may be under a cover in your garden or path.

If the escaping water cannot be controlled immediately, open all cold water taps so that the pipework and storage system drains quickly. DO NOT TURN ON HOT TAPS. Turn off the central heating system and, if it uses a solid fuel boiler, allow the fire to die out. Switch off any electric immersion heater, then call NT Barrett immediately.

Frozen Pipes

If a pipe freezes, turn off the mains water supply at the stop valve, turn off your boiler and your immersion heater. Then call NT Barrett, your professional plumber immediately on the emergency line.

Can You Smell Gas?

The National Grid operates a free emergency 24 hour telephone number which is 0800 111 999. If you are deaf or hearing impaired - minicom / textphone 0800 371787.

Immediate Emergency Advice:

  2. Never touch any electrical appliance (including light switches).
  3. Put out naked flames.
  4. Ventilate the property by opening doors and windows.
  5. Keep people away from the affected area and the property.
  6. Turn off the gas supply at the meter using the emergency control valve.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Exposure to Carbon Monoxide can cause the following symptoms, headaches, nausea, dizziness and fatigue, and severe cases can lead to convulsions, unconsciousness and even death.

If you start feeling the symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning get outside of the property immediately. If you have been feeling ill and suspect Carbon Monoxide poisoning ask your doctor for a CohB test.
